In Loving Memory of
Stuart "Mickey" Berdell Dupree-Grant
April 1, 1959 - January 14, 2026
Born in Denver, Colorado, Stuart B. Dupree-Grant - affectionately known as "Mickey" - passed away peacefully in the comfort of his own home in Tacoma, Washington, on January 14, 2026.
At the age of 4, Mickey and his siblings moved to Tacoma with their mother, Clara Grant, and stepfather, Joseph Grant, both of whom preceded him in death. He was raised alongside six siblings: Louis “Ty” Tinsley, Debrah Tinsley, Charles Tinsley, Laura Grant, Tracey Grant, and Jeanette Grant . He enjoyed playing uncle to several nieces, nephews, and grand-nieces and nephews. Mickey was married once and had two stepchildren.
He attended Stanley Elementary School and St. Leo's, followed by Jason Lee Junior High School and Henry Foss High School.
Mickey earned his nickname in a way that only made sense to his maternal grandmother, who declared he should be called "Mickey," short for "Mickey Mouse." While the logic escaped everyone else, the name stuck for life. He tried to push the more dignified "Stuart," but that only worked if you weren't introduced to him as Mickey.
Mickey was a very talented artist who loved working with paint and carvings. He was a deeply spiritual person, kept in church throughout his youth by his mother. He had a genuine heart and, to our knowledge, never intentionally harmed anyone. Though sensitive and vulnerable, he possessed a childlike quality that allowed him to make friends with pretty much anyone.
His mother called him a "Wanderlust" because he loved to travel - mainly throughout Western Washington, California, Arizona, and Denver. It didn't bother him to set off on a trip with a one-way ticket and no way to get home. Maybe it didn't bother him because he knew he left enough folks back home who would be worrying for him!
Mickey could have given Fred Sanford a run for his money. He would find and haul all kinds of treasures - good finds to him, junk to everyone else. He could have filled up a whole house and been so content!
In his younger years, Mickey was meticulous with his personal hygiene - so much so that he couldn't run around the corner to the "Stop and Go" before he cleaned and groomed his body and creased his pants. Mom used to get so pissed off at him, unable to understand why he couldn't just run to the store real fast to get the item she needed to complete her meal.
He was protective and generous with his siblings. He would take his baby sister to the drive-in movies, let her sip some of his beer, and even let her drive his Corvair. He stood up for her and protected her.
Mickey really was a good guy - an angel, though his halo was tilted. Occasionally, it was heartbreaking when he trusted the wrong person and would get taken advantage of or physically hurt. That would set his sisters off, even if they were in another state with no power to do anything about it. They hated the thought of anyone hurting their brother. Now, that's not to say his own sisters weren't tempted to knock him out sometimes - after all, brothers and sisters know which buttons to push. Being childlike, he found joy in pushing their buttons, knowing his sisters wouldn't hurt him no matter how mad they got. But the truth is, at least one sister says it came pretty close!
The family is grateful to the Creator for having grace and mercy, allowing Mickey's spirit to exit the earth peacefully, not leaving his flesh to the public for display. When we look at photos from the past, we see the handsome and happy brother who smiled often - the one we will always remember and hold in our hearts.
It is sad how much we can forget while living life, but those precious memories remain: the laughter, the protection, the adventures, and the unconditional love.
Mickey will always be loved and deeply missed by his family and friends.
Rest in peace, Mickey. Your wanderlust has taken you home.
